Gowanus revisited

A couple of days ago, I wandered over to check on my favorite Brooklyn guerrilla public art installation.

This gives a better idea of the scale when you're walking by:

Unfortunately, this was the scene I found:

Am I alone in thinking that the the story of a marooned community of Little People and their almost-complete annihilation less than a month later would make a kick-ass stop-motion short film?

Marooned

A couple of weeks ago, I was housesitting for a friend whose place is roughly a mile and a half from my office, which made for a nice walk in the morning and evening for the week I stayed there. The walk took me over the Gowanus Canal, a body of water so polluted that it actually, quite literally, has gonorrhea. (I have to say, extreme pollution aside, I really like the area around the canal. It's a semi-seedy, mostly industrial zone between two pretty ritzy neighborhoods. If the zoning is changed from commercial to residential, which I think is up before whatever body is responsible for such designations as I write this, I expect it'll be nothing but shiny, crappy new condo buildings within two years. Boo.)

So imagine my surprise when I looked down at the water while I was crossing the Union St. bridge and saw something colorful on top of one of the pilings.

All was quiet on New Year's Day

So, after that ambitious post, I didn't do all that much yesterday.

I did clean off my desk, which is a rare enough occurrence that I documented it. It won't look like this for long — I like my scraps of paper too much for that.

That's this skirt on Flickr, which I love. I want to make something similar out of some dark red handspun Romney. I still have to ply most of it though, so it won't happen for a while.

And I did make hoppin' john, though I only took a photo of the bacon.

A picture of the finished dish and the recipe are in last year's post here. This year, I only used half a pound of bacon and left out the wine, since I didn't have any open.

I went for a walk around twilight and did, in fact, walk over the overpass by the rail yard.

Zoe had me over for dinner and made really fantastic braised chicken thighs with lemon, olives and prunes as well as the best cheesecake ever. (Still is!) I love dinner at home with friends. I love restaurants too, of course, but I love home more.

Oh, what else? I didn't start any new projects yesterday, but I did stay up much later than I should have working on some that I already had going. It's so easy for me to get in the habit of staying up late if I have a couple days in a row when I don't need to be anywhere in the morning. Getting up this morning was no fun whatsoever, especially when I realized that I was out of coffee. And then a rotten clementine in my bag exploded — I could smell that fermented fruit smell while I was on the train and kept thinking someone nearby was drinking really bad wine — and soaked my planner to the point that I won't be able to salvage it. Which is actually fine, since I've been coveting a new Moleskine and now have a reason to run out on my lunch break and get one.

I really like these desolate, wintry landscapes.

No fresh snow while I was up at my parents', but there was plenty on the ground already. Of course, it was 40 degrees and raining the day I has planned to go snowshoeing, but I managed to get out for a walk at least once a day otherwise.
